The future often becomes believable at object scale. A city model turns policy into scenery. A fan borrows the body of an aircraft. A television swivels away from the furniture it replaced. A keypad reduces spaceflight to a compact exchange of numbers and commands.
These are not seven things to buy, nor a definitive ranking. Most were not described as “retro-futurist” when they were made. They become retro-futurist evidence when we view their original promise from the other side of history.
Each entry asks the same questions: What can we see? What future did it imply? What does hindsight add?
1. Futurama’s city model, 1939: the system as spectacle
At the 1939 New York World’s Fair, visitors to General Motors’ Futurama attraction moved above a vast model of the United States imagined in 1960. Industrial designer Norman Bel Geddes’ landscape joined modernist skyscrapers, multilane highways, and controlled traffic into a seamless national system. Visible signal: Miniature towers, graded roads, separated traffic flows, and a viewpoint high enough to make the whole environment legible at once.
The future it implied: Technology and planning would remove friction by coordinating the city as one machine. Movement, housing, landscape, and communication could be designed together.
What hindsight changes: The highway future partly arrived, but not with the model’s cleanliness or neutrality. Roads reorganized real neighborhoods and locked in new dependencies. The model remains compelling because it gives complexity a perfect surface. It also reminds us to ask who controls the viewpoint and what disappears at miniature scale.
Through Retro-Futurism’s contemporary lens, this is SYSTEMS at maximum size: not an interface inside the city, but the city itself as interface.
2. The streamlined Westinghouse desk fan: motion without travel
In the 1930s, industrial designers moved the curving forms of aircraft into consumer products. The National Air and Space Museum identifies horizontality, speed lines, reduced ornament, and materials such as Bakelite, chrome, glass block, and stainless steel as recurring features of streamlined design. Its Westinghouse desk fan uses a Bakelite Micarta base to give an everyday appliance a smooth, aerodynamic stance. (National Air and Space Museum)
Visible signal: A rounded base, horizontal emphasis, enclosed transitions, and a profile that appears to meet the air cleanly.
The future it implied: Modern engineering would enter ordinary rooms. An appliance could borrow the authority of aviation, making technological progress feel domestic and attainable.
What hindsight changes: The fan does not become more efficient because its base looks fast. That gap is exactly what makes the object useful. Streamlining was both an engineering principle and a visual metaphor. Once speed became a style, even a stationary machine could seem pointed toward tomorrow.
This signal persists in concept vehicles, appliances, packaging, and graphics: the body announces motion before anything moves.
3. The Philco Predicta Princess television, 1959: the screen breaks free
The Predicta Princess was a tabletop television produced by Philco in 1959. Instead of concealing the apparatus inside a large wooden cabinet, it placed a swiveling screen on a low neck above a compact base. Cooper Hewitt notes that the design allowed the television to be repositioned around the home and that its screen-and-base arrangement now looks strikingly like later desktop computers. Visible signal: An articulated display, a compact equipment base, and a clear separation between information surface and supporting machine.
The future it implied: The screen would become flexible, portable, and responsive to daily life instead of remaining a fixed piece of furniture.
What hindsight changes: Screens did become mobile, though not in the form the Princess proposed. The object now seems to forecast one branch of personal computing while remaining unmistakably tied to the domestic assumptions of its own marketing. Its futurity is therefore mixed: formal invention sits beside a period-specific picture of who would move the screen and why.
The useful design lesson is not “make it look like a 1950s TV.” It is that changing the relationship between user, display, and base can make a familiar technology feel newly alive.
4. Archigram’s Plug-In City, 1964: obsolescence becomes architecture
Peter Cook’s 1964 axonometric drawing for Archigram’s Plug-In City proposed a giant framework containing residences, access routes, and services. Individual building units could be removed, while permanent cranes enabled continual rebuilding. MoMA describes the project as architecture designed to encourage change through obsolescence—part of Archigram’s wider exploration of mobile, flexible, and impermanent ways of living. Visible signal: A dense megastructure, exposed routes and services, replaceable modules, crane rails, and a diagrammatic viewpoint that makes change look operational.
The future it implied: A city would behave less like a monument and more like hardware. Components could be upgraded as needs changed; architecture could become an open system.
What hindsight changes: Replaceability can mean freedom, but it can also mean relentless churn. Today, planned obsolescence carries the shadow of waste, extraction, and short product cycles. Plug-In City remains provocative because it does not hide that instability. The mechanism of change is the image.
In Retro-Futurism’s lens, the project sits between SYSTEMS and GLITCHES: a perfect framework whose identity depends on never being complete.
5. André Courrèges’ pantsuit, circa 1968: the body joins the forecast
The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates this wool pantsuit by André Courrèges to about 1968. Its collection record emphasizes clean geometric lines, minimal piping, bright color, and a design vocabulary shaped by Courrèges’ interest in the future. The museum also situates it within the designer’s Space Age work, which paired minimal garments with boots, goggles, and bonnet-like headwear. (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
The V&A places that work in a broader 1960s embrace of plastics, synthetic fibres, angular mini-dresses, trouser suits, white-and-silver palettes, vinyl, and visor forms. (V&A)
Visible signal: Precise geometry, sharp color blocking, controlled seams, and a silhouette built for movement rather than ornamental weight.
The future it implied: Modern life would change how bodies moved and how social roles appeared. Futurity could be worn, not merely observed through a showroom window.
What hindsight changes: Space Age fashion is often reduced to silver costumes and bubble helmets. The pantsuit is more instructive. Its signal comes from proportion, line, and freedom of movement. The future is encoded in tailoring.
That is why retro-futurist clothing need not reproduce a historical garment. A contemporary surface can carry interface logic, speed, or memory while remaining unmistakably of the present.
6. The Apollo 7 Display-Keyboard, 1968: the future uses verbs and nouns
The Display-Keyboard, or DSKY, installed in the Apollo 7 Command Module was an interface to the onboard guidance computer. Astronauts entered numerical codes in “verb–noun” sequences—for example, an action paired with the data to display. The unit combined a small keypad, status lights, and numerical readouts; the National Air and Space Museum identifies it as one of two DSKYs flown on the October 1968 mission. Visible signal: A rigid key matrix, abbreviated labels, illuminated numbers, and warning states arranged for quick reading under operational pressure.
The future it implied: Human beings could travel beyond Earth by learning a precise dialogue with a compact computer. The machine would not pretend to be human; the operator would meet it through a disciplined command language.
What hindsight changes: Contemporary interfaces often hide procedure behind gestures and conversational prompts. The DSKY exposes the transaction. Its limited display and terse syntax now feel alien and strangely honest. Every input declares that the user is operating a system with boundaries.
This is why command grids and status lights remain powerful visual material. Used carefully, they suggest consequence. Used carelessly, they collapse into meaningless “tech” decoration.
7. Sony’s TPS-L2 Walkman, 1979: private space becomes portable
Sony released the TPS-L2 portable cassette player in Japan in 1979. MoMA describes a device only slightly larger than the cassette it carried, with lightweight headphones, two listening jacks, and a “hotline” control that interrupted the music so two listeners could speak through a built-in microphone. Visible signal: A compact metal-and-plastic case, exposed mechanical controls, a cassette door, paired headphone ports, and a wired listening system that travels with the body.
The future it implied: Personal media could create a movable private zone inside the city. Listening no longer belonged to the room, car, or shared speaker; a person could carry an authored sound environment through public space.
What hindsight changes: Portable listening became ordinary, then nearly invisible inside multipurpose devices and wireless services. The Walkman now carries a double memory: the freedom of taking music anywhere and the physical discipline of choosing, turning, rewinding, and carrying a finite recording.
This is where later analog design deepens the retro-futurist object story. Tomorrow is no longer only a city, appliance, spacecraft, or garment. It is an intimate interface that edits the wearer’s experience of the present.
What these seven objects have in common
Their surfaces are radically different, but each turns an abstract forecast into a readable relationship:
- Futurama makes the citizen a viewer of the total system.
- The desk fan makes speed a domestic form.
- The Predicta makes the screen articulate.
- Plug-In City makes replacement the organizing principle.
- The Courrèges pantsuit makes the body part of the future.
- The DSKY makes computer dialogue procedural.
- The Walkman makes private media portable.
This is the most useful way to read retro-futurist objects. Do not stop at chrome, fins, domes, or glowing numbers. Ask what relationship the design proposed between people, technology, and time.
The signal lives between objects
The seven examples do not divide neatly into seven styles. Their signals cross.
Futurama and Plug-In City place change inside a total structure, while the DSKY compresses the structure into a command exchange. The desk fan turns motion into a stationary profile; the Walkman turns movement through the city into a private soundtrack. The pantsuit and Predicta redraw the distance between body and machine. Hindsight then interrupts every promise: perfect coordination reveals exclusions, replaceability produces churn, and once-new media becomes memory.
Retro-Futurism names those crossings SYSTEMS, MEMORIES, MOTION, and GLITCHES. This is the brand’s interpretive lens, not a historical classification imposed on the source objects. The value of the lens is not filing each artifact into one collection. It is noticing when order becomes residue, movement becomes feeling, or a clean forecast develops a break.
Read the promise, then read the distance
A retro-futurist object is not valuable because it “predicted the iPhone” or looks like a prop. That kind of hindsight flattens history into a guessing game.
The stronger reading preserves two views at once: what the design made plausible then, and what the intervening years allow us to see now. The distance between those views is where the object becomes culturally potent.
